The stranger pulls off the road to sit on a fallen pine.
There is a loud, "crack." A pine falls slowly at first, then gains momentum, the willowy branches crashing through their neighbors. Splitting, tearing as they go.
"Look!” Says the stranger.
It is too late. The tree strikes the old man and he is felled beneath its weight. The stranger jumps from the log and runs to the fallen timber hoping to aid the man. He looks under the heavy trunk, twelve inches across. There is no man.
